Representatives of "Georgian Dream" are displaying clear fear and a sense of impending danger regarding the European People's Party (EPP) resolution. Since this morning, representatives of Ivanishvili's party have been hurling insults at the EPP, accusing Europe's largest political alliance of every conceivable grave offense.
The European People's Party has tabled a resolution titled "The Rise of Authoritarianism in Georgia."
As stated in the European People's Party resolution, the document's sponsors express serious concern over the dramatic rise of authoritarianism in Georgia and the ongoing constitutional, political, and human rights crisis in the country.
"We express serious concern over the dramatic rise of authoritarianism in Georgia and the ongoing constitutional, political, and human rights crisis in the country—a crisis that has persisted since 'Georgian Dream' announced the suspension of Georgia's EU integration process;" Whereas the Georgian authorities have continued the systematic crackdown on the political opposition, civil society, independent media, and peaceful demonstrators, including through the use of politically motivated arrests, criminal prosecutions, intimidation, and repressive legislation; whereas the arrest on September 11, 2026, of Giorgi Baramidze—a leader of the United National Movement and an opposition politician—on charges of treason represents a further escalation in the use of criminal law against political opponents and demonstrates the growing criminalization of political expression; whereas the judicial system continues to be used as an instrument of political repression rather than as an independent guarantor of the rule of law; whereas the internal fragmentation of "Georgian Dream" is accompanied by an unprecedented purge of former high-ranking officials and individuals linked to the previous government, including dismissals, investigations, arrests, and criminal prosecutions against former high-ranking state officials; Whereas these events point to the growing instability of the ruling political establishment and raise serious concerns that selective anti-corruption prosecution and the criminal justice system are increasingly being used as instruments for the regime’s internal consolidation and the strengthening of political control; whereas Georgian Dream has renewed public statements regarding the banning of the United National Movement and other democratic opposition parties, accompanied by the invocation of formal Constitutional Court procedures; whereas this threatens political pluralism and creates conditions for the consolidation of a one-party dictatorship; whereas fundamental freedoms of assembly, expression, and association remain severely restricted, and credible allegations of excessive use of force, torture, and ill-treatment against peaceful demonstrators are not being adequately investigated; Given that attacks on independent civil society, the media, and academic institutions—as well as the intimidation and dismissal of public officials—have further weakened democratic institutions;
The European People’s Party expresses its solidarity with the Georgian people in their struggle to defend their democracy, fundamental freedoms, sovereignty, and European future, and to uphold their constitutionally guaranteed legitimate rights. We once again express our solidarity with the people of Georgia in their struggle to defend their constitutionally guaranteed legitimate rights regarding democracy, fundamental freedoms, sovereignty, and their European future; we strongly condemn the arrest of Giorgi Baramidze on clearly political grounds and demand the release of all political prisoners—including Georgia’s third president, Mikheil Saakashvili—and the immediate termination of all politically motivated proceedings; we call upon the Georgian authorities to halt legal procedures aimed at banning democratic opposition parties—including the United National Movement, a member of the European People’s Party—and to respect political pluralism and the right of citizens to freely choose their political representatives; we call for an independent international investigation into allegations of torture, ill-treatment, excessive use of force, and other human rights violations committed against peaceful demonstrators, and for the perpetrators to be held accountable; We call upon the European Union and its member states to strengthen targeted sanctions and other restrictive measures against individuals responsible for political repression, human rights violations, election manipulation, and the subversion of democratic institutions; we emphasize that "Georgian Dream" bears full responsibility for the consequences that may arise from the suspension of the visa-free regime for certain categories of Georgian citizens, in accordance with Article 8a, paragraph 1, point (h) of the revised EU Regulation 2018/1806; and we call upon the European Commission to ensure...
"...ensure the targeted application of the said mechanism against officials holding positions of responsibility and their family members; we reiterate that the ongoing political and constitutional crisis—which hinders Georgia’s European path and weakens the country’s resilience against Russian influence—can be resolved only through genuinely free, fair, and competitive parliamentary elections held in a democratic environment, administered by an independent and impartial election authority, and subject to credible international observation," the document states.
"The European People’s Party cares nothing for democracy—neither in its own country nor within European structures, and certainly not in our country," Rati Ionatamishvili, Chairman of the Parliament’s Human Rights and Civil Integration Committee, told the Georgian Public Broadcaster.
According to him, the only thing the European People’s Party cares about is encouraging violence in our country. "They are unable to achieve this, and that reality is precisely what makes them lose their composure. Of course, they will never attain their desired outcome through such actions, demands, and resolutions. They will simply make it easier for our society to draw correct, objective, and fair conclusions. Let them continue; we have no objection to that. For the EPP, the 'Nats' [United National Movement] and Mikheil Saakashvili are an extension of their own body. Exactly which body—or what kind—is not for us to say, but the fact remains that they constitute a single entity and are equally hostile toward Georgia. This is not their first such move; however, just as all their previous steps were misguided and futile, their future ambitions will likewise come to nothing," stated Rati Ionatamishvili.
"The European People's Party is composed of friends of Saakashvili and his sadistic regime; what else would one expect them to demand from the EU regarding Georgia?" said Davit Matikashvili, Chairman of the Parliament's Procedural Issues Committee.
According to him, for them, the truth is not the truth. "They always look for the reality of the situation where it does not exist. Driven by the agenda of Saakashvili and his network of agents, they are attempting to throw a lifeline to the 'National Movement.' This is not a new development; it has been going on for some time. Therefore, the main point is not what the 'People's Party' is demanding from Europe, but rather what the Georgian people are demanding," stated Davit Matikashvili.
